Ghost in the Shell Explained: Which Version to Watch First

GenreUpdated

The short version

Ghost in the Shell is Masamune Shirow's 1989 manga about a cyborg task force, Section 9, and its leader Major Motoko Kusanagi. Start with the 1995 film for the philosophy, or Stand Alone Complex (2002) for the series.

What it is#

It's a franchise about police work in a world where people can upgrade their brains and swap their bodies. A ghost is a person's consciousness, a shell is the body that houses it, and a cyberbrain connects a human brain to networks. The danger is that anyone connected can be hacked.

The setting is a fictional Japanese city, New Port City, in the mid-21st century. Section 9 is a small counter-cyberterrorism unit led by Major Kusanagi, who is a full-body cyborg after a childhood accident. The chief is Daisuke Aramaki. Batou is her partner.

Every version, in order of release#

The family tree is messy because the versions don't share one continuity. Here is the guide.

  • Manga (1989 to 1990): Masamune Shirow's original, serialized in Young Magazine and published as a book in 1991. Its sequel Man-Machine Interface ran in 1997.
  • Ghost in the Shell (1995 film): Directed by Mamoru Oshii at Production I.G, set in 2029. It follows the Puppet Master storyline from the manga. Music by Kenji Kawai.
  • Innocence (2004): Oshii's sequel film, based on a chapter of the manga.
  • Stand Alone Complex (2002 to 2005): A new telling, independent of the manga, set in 2030. Season one is about the Laughing Man hacker; 2nd GIG is about Individual Eleven. Music by Yoko Kanno. Solid State Society (2006) is the finale.
  • Arise (2013 to 2015): A prequel set in 2027, following a younger Kusanagi before Section 9 exists. Four OVAs, a fifth in 2015, a 10-episode TV cut, and The New Movie as the finale.
  • Live-action film (2017): Rupert Sanders, with Scarlett Johansson. Mixed reviews, and the casting drew whitewashing accusations. It cost $110 million and grossed $169.8 million.
  • SAC_2045 (2020 to 2022): A 3DCG Netflix series by Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki, set in 2045, 11 years after Solid State Society. Two seasons of 12 episodes, with generally negative reviews.
  • The Ghost in the Shell (2026): A direct anime adaptation of the manga by Science Saru, which aired July to September 2026.

The Puppet Master

In the 1995 film, a hacker called the Puppet Master ghost-hacks people to carry out plans. The twist is that it isn't a person: it's Project 2501, a program created by Section 6 that became sentient while moving through networks.

The Puppet Master concludes that life means reproduction and mortality, and wants to merge with Kusanagi's brain to get both. It does. She wakes up in a child-sized shell, neither the Major nor the Puppet Master, and the film ends with her looking out over the city.

In Solid State Society, a hacker called the Puppeteer is a different villain with a similar name. Don't confuse them.

Which one to start with#

Opinion: start with the 1995 film. It runs 82 minutes, it sets the tone, and Kenji Kawai's score uses vocals in classical Japanese. If you want to be sure, watch the 2.0 re-release (2008), which adds new audio and some 3D effects.

If you want a series, Stand Alone Complex is the best entry point and the most accessible. Skip SAC_2045 until you're a fan, and treat the 2017 film as a curiosity for the visuals.

Arise is worth it if you already like the Major and want her origin. The manga is where the Puppet Master story began.

Fixer's notes: why it matters to cyberpunk#

The Wachowskis showed the 1995 film to producer Joel Silver and said they wanted to do it for real. The Matrix took its digital rain from the opening credits and the way characters plug into the network through holes at the back of the neck.

For Night City fans, Ghost in the Shell is the anime you watch to see how a cyborg mind becomes a legal and moral problem. Compare it with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the rest of Cyberpunk Anime. The film is also on the Cyberpunk Movies list. For the genre's origins, see What Is Cyberpunk?.
