Mike Pondsmith: The Man Who Wrote Cyberpunk (and Night City)
The short version
Mike Pondsmith is the American game designer who wrote the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG (1988) and runs its publisher, R. Talsorian Games. CD Projekt Red licensed his world for Cyberpunk 2077, and he stayed on as a consultant.

Who he is#
Pondsmith grew up in a military family, studied graphic design and behavioral psychology at UC Davis, and started out packaging computer games for the California Pacific Computer Company. The tabletop career came later, almost by accident. He was a naval wargamer who liked the rules of Dungeons & Dragons and had no interest in elves.
His first hit was Mekton, a mecha game built from Japanese manga he couldn't read. He founded R. Talsorian Games in the mid-1980s on the strength of it. The name belongs to a real investor, a raisin farmer in Fresno who, in Pondsmith's telling, never plays RPGs.
Cyberpunk, the game#
R. Talsorian released Cyberpunk in 1988, set in 2013, as a boxed set of three books. It was the second game on his Interlock system, after Mekton II. Cyberpunk 2020 followed in 1990 with a timeline moved forward and new rules for combat, netrunning and character creation. Later editions are Cybergeneration (1993), Cyberpunk v3.0 (2005) and Cyberpunk Red (2020, set in 2045).
Pondsmith has said the point was to recreate the look and attitude of Blade Runner, which he saw as a film-noir take on technology. Walter Jon Williams' novel Hardwired was the book that mattered, and Williams helped playtest. Here is the part that surprises people: Pondsmith didn't read Neuromancer until later, so the assumption that Gibson was the blueprint is wrong. Streets of Fire and the anime Bubblegum Crisis fed in too.
The Cyberpunk 2020 vs RED page covers how the editions differ.
Maximum Mike#
Pondsmith writes himself into the books as Maximum Mike, a narrator who breaks the fourth wall and talks straight to the reader. It's why the rulebooks read like a person at your table, not a manual. In Cyberpunk 2077 he voices Maximum Mike as the DJ of an in-game radio station.
He also turned up in the Netrunner card game as Omni Kismet, Ph.D. That's an anagram of his name, which tells you what kind of joke he likes.
Cyberpunk 2077 and Edgerunners#
CD Projekt Red approached him in early 2012 and sent a copy of The Witcher 2. The deal gave the studio the story from 2077 onward, while Pondsmith kept the rights to Cyberpunk media set before that year. He then served as a consultant on Cyberpunk 2077 to keep the setting consistent with the tabletop canon.
That's why Johnny Silverhand and Arasaka arrive in the game already carrying decades of tabletop history. When Cyberpunk: Edgerunners came out in 2022 he praised it: "It's like seeing my brain in a big screen anime." R. Talsorian announced an Edgerunners expansion for Cyberpunk Red soon after, and it shipped as the Edgerunners Mission Kit in June 2024.
Fixer's notes: where to start with his work#
Opinion: read a Cyberpunk rulebook even if you never roll a die. Cyberpunk Red is the easiest way in, and the Maximum Mike sidebars are the best writing in tabletop gaming that nobody quotes.
If you want the non-cyberpunk Pondsmith, Castle Falkenstein (1994) is the one. It's a steampunk fantasy game that uses playing cards instead of dice, and it won the 1994 Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Rules.
Pondsmith also has a Hall of Fame spot, inducted at the Origins Awards in 2006. For what Cyberpunk is as a genre, start at What Is Cyberpunk?.
