Cyberpunk 2020: The 1990 Tabletop RPG Behind Cyberpunk 2077

TabletopUpdated

The short version

Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of Mike Pondsmith's tabletop RPG, published by R. Talsorian Games in 1990 and set in 2020. It is the edition where Night City, Arasaka, Militech and Johnny Silverhand took the shape that Cyberpunk RED and Cyberpunk 2077 inherited.

What it is#

Cyberpunk 2020 is the second edition of Mike Pondsmith's game, and the book most old-school fans mean when they say Cyberpunk. The original 1988 game, later called Cyberpunk 2013, was set in 2013. For the 1990 revision the date moved forward and the rules for combat, netrunning and character creation were updated. The timeline was also changed to account for German reunification in 1990.

The game came as a boxed set with a 222-page softcover rulebook and a 24-page reference guide and adventure. Later revised versions are 2.00 (1992) and 2.01 (1993), though some sources date 2.00 to 1991.

How the rules work#

The Interlock system: roll a ten-sided die, add your stat and relevant skill, and beat a Difficulty Value set by the gamemaster. Cyberpunk was one of the first tabletop games to use difficulty values.

Combat is called Friday Night Firefight, and it is lethal. Damage capacity does not grow as the character improves, so a careless character dies fast. At the table that means one bad roll ends the session, so people learn to take cover. Improvement is skill-based, not level-based.

Cyberware costs Humanity. Every ten points of Humanity Cost removes a point of Empathy, and an Empathy of zero is cyberpsychosis, at which point the character becomes an NPC run by the gamemaster. The Lifepath system generates backgrounds, goals and past events for each character. The game's four tenets: style over substance, attitude is everything, always take it to the Edge, and (break) the rules.

Roles and netrunning#

The game has ten roles: rockerboys, solos, netrunners, nomads, fixers, medias, techs (techies), medtechs, corpos and lawmen. Some listings leave out the Medtech and count nine. The Cyberpunk RED roles page compares them with the newer list.

Netrunners 'jack in' to the NET with a cyberdeck and the Interface special ability. In 2020 a netrunner could sit alone in a room while the rest of the party fought, which is a brilliant way to lose a player for an hour. Cyberpunk RED fixed that with VR goggles that keep the netrunner in the scene.

The sourcebook line#

After 2020 came dozens of supplements. R. Talsorian published 28 rules supplements and sourcebooks and 6 adventures between 1993 and 1996, and Atlas Games published twelve adventures under license from 1991 to 1994.

Among many others: Chromebook volumes 1 to 4, the Corporation Report series, Night City, Eurosource, Pacific Rim, Rache Bartmoss' Guide to the Net, Solo of Fortune 2 and the Firestorm adventures. The Firestorm books pushed the timeline to 2022 and the Fourth Corporate War, and a third one became part of the 2005 edition, Cyberpunk V3.0. There was also a spin-off, CyberGeneration (1993), and two Cyberpunk 2020 novels in 1995 and 1996.

What Cyberpunk 2077 took from it#

Night City became a defined place in this edition, and many corporations got full backstories. The 2020 rulebook included an adventure, Never Fade Away, featuring Johnny Silverhand. The Corporation Report books supply the Arasaka and Militech backstories, and the band Samurai is founded in 2003. The Fourth Corporate War, which RED covers, was only set up in this edition's Firestorm adventures.

Terms like 'edgerunner' also come from this era; 'edgerunner' first appears in the Night City sourcebook (page 37). The cyberpunk slang page has the full list.

Fixer's notes: should you play 2020 today?#

Opinion: for a new table, play Cyberpunk RED. It streamlines 2020, has better netrunning, and is in print with a free Easy Mode. Play 2020 if you want the classic rules, the sourcebooks or the 1990s tone, and you don't mind the math.

The 2.01 core book is a free download from GOG for owners of Cyberpunk 2077 on that platform, and the print and PDF are on DriveThruRPG and the R. Talsorian Store. That text is dated, so check the store pages before you rely on the free copy.

The Cyberpunk timeline page puts the 2020-era events in order and marks which come from this edition.

The game's creator has his own page: Mike Pondsmith.

Is Cyberpunk 2020 canon to Cyberpunk 2077?

Partly. 2020 is where Night City, Arasaka and Militech took shape, but when the books and the 2077 timeline disagree, 2077 wins for anything set in the 2070s.

Cyberware costs Humanity. Every ten points of Humanity Cost removes a point of Empathy, and an Empathy of zero is cyberpsychosis.
