Where Is Night City? The Lore Location and the Real Place Behind It
The short version
In the lore, Night City is a free city on the California coast, in the Free State of Northern California, between San Francisco and Los Angeles. In the real world its model is Morro Bay, a small town on California's Central Coast.

Where Night City is in the lore#
Night City is on the Pacific coast of California, on a bay the lore calls Del Coronado Bay. It is a city-state between North and South California. The drive to San Francisco or Los Angeles takes four to six hours, depending on road gangs and road quality.
It sits in the Free State of Northern California, often shortened to NorCal. After the Unification War of 2069 to 2070, Night City became a free city outside both NorCal and the New United States. The border wall built after the war between the two Californias was extended through the Badlands south of the city. The full city profile has the rest of the history.
The real place behind it#
Mike Pondsmith, who created the tabletop game, based Night City on Morro Bay, a seaside town in San Luis Obispo County on California's Central Coast.
Morro Bay had a population of 10,757 in the 2020 census. Night City, in the 2020 edition, has about five million. The real town has a harbor and a 576-foot volcanic rock at its entrance, called Morro Rock. The lore keeps the Rock: it puts the NCX Spaceport on a Morro Rock island west of downtown. A fishing town got a spaceport. Fair trade.
What Pondsmith has said#
Pondsmith has talked about the location in several comments. He says he drove through Morro Bay on road trips, liked it, and used it as the bones of the map. He needed more room, so he filled in part of the bay, as real cities such as San Francisco and Seattle were built partly on fill. Los Osos, next to Morro Bay, is where Rancho Coronado and Heywood would sit.
He also says it is not Coronado in southern California, which he took care to point out because he used to live in San Diego. And he says the location was picked as a choke point on the coast that suited a Free State.
Northern or Southern California#
Northern in the lore. Morro Bay is on the Central Coast, which many people would call neither, and some descriptions of the city say Central California. Both are true in their own frame. The in-game world divides the state into NorCal and SoCal, and Night City is placed between them, then made independent.
NorCal is the city's former state. In the 2077 timeline, which the anime follows, Night City has been independent since 2070. If someone at your table says "it's in NorCal," they're about seven years of lore out of date.
Does the city match the map#
Not closely. The city was reshaped between the 2020 and RED editions and again for 2077, so that a Watson-to-Pacifica trip would not take as long as a real commute. The result is a compromise between the old tabletop map and what works in a game.
If you visit Morro Bay expecting skyscrapers, you will find a fishing town. The Rock is the thing to look for.
Fixer's notes#
Use the real map for flavor and the lore map for play. If your tabletop group argues about distances, the Edgerunners Guide to Night City, the Cyberpunk RED setting book, is where to look.
Ready to go inside? Night City's districts come first, then the bar everyone visits first, the Afterlife, and the walled-off corner added in 2023, Dogtown.

Questions people ask#
Where is Night City located?
On the Pacific coast of California, on a bay the lore calls Del Coronado Bay, between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The drive to either takes four to six hours.
Is Night City based on a real city?
Yes. Mike Pondsmith based it on Morro Bay, a seaside town in San Luis Obispo County on California's Central Coast. The lore keeps Morro Rock, the 576-foot volcanic rock at the harbor entrance.
Is Night City in Northern or Southern California?
Northern, in the lore: it sat in the Free State of Northern California until it became an independent free city after the Unification War of 2069 to 2070. Morro Bay itself is on the Central Coast, which is neither.
Can you visit Night City in real life?
You can visit Morro Bay, but expect a fishing town, not skyscrapers. Morro Bay had 10,757 people in the 2020 census, while the 2020-edition Night City has about five million.
Is Night City the same as Coronado?
No. Pondsmith has said it is not Coronado in southern California, and he took care to point that out because he used to live in San Diego.
