Night CityUpdated

The short version

The Afterlife is the bar in Little China, in Watson, Night City, where fixers and mercenaries take and talk jobs. Rogue Amendiares owns it, and in Cyberpunk 2077 you need a referral or a name to get past the door.

What the Afterlife is#

The Afterlife is a club in Little China, in the Watson district of northern Night City, on Palm View street. It is the most famous edgerunner establishment in the city. Mercs go there to drink, to find fixers and to be seen. The being seen part is the point.

A line from the in-game database entry sums it up: there is only one path in Night City worth walking, the one that leads to the Afterlife.

Rogue and the history#

Rogue Amendiares owns it. The club started out downtown and was abandoned as the area gentrified after the Time of the Red. Rogue reopened it in southern Watson. She built the new one in a former morgue, which tells you what she thinks of subtlety.

The tradition stayed: drinks named after legendary edgerunners who went out in a blaze of glory. Order one and you are drinking a dead legend. The in-game database entry adds a rumor: Morgan Blackhand's ghost wanders the bar, switching off the safeties of customers' holstered guns.

How to get in#

In Cyberpunk 2077 you cannot enter until you meet Jackie Welles at the start of the Heist. Before that, the bouncer, Emmerick Bronson, asks if you have a referral from someone and tells you to keep moving. In the lore, mercs need to be well known or vouched for.

V, Jackie and T-Bug first walk in after finishing a job for the fixer Dexter DeShawn. Your first walk through that door is the game telling you that you matter now.

In Edgerunners#

The Afterlife appears in Edgerunners and Edgerunners 2, where high street-cred fixers and mercs such as Faraday and David Martinez drink there in the 2070s. Rebecca points excitedly at Rogue. Fan energy, in a bar where fans get shot.

Who you meet there#

People in or around the Afterlife in 2077 include:

  • Rogue Amendiares: Owner. Runs the place like she has run it for decades, because she has.
  • Emmerick Bronson: Bouncer. The reason you need a name.
  • Claire Russell: Bartender. Knows what you ordered last time.
  • Crispin "Squama" Weyland: Rogue's bodyguard.
  • Nix: A netrunner who works for Rogue.
  • Dexter DeShawn: The fixer V and Jackie work for before their first visit.

Fixer's notes#

Our read: the Afterlife works because it is a business with a rule, not a hangout. If you can get in, you are somebody, and if you can't, you aren't yet. Steal that rule for a tabletop campaign: let players earn the door.

For the city around it, see Night City. For the walled district across town, see Dogtown. The braindance series The Real Cyberpunks of Night City was filmed in the bar.
