Watson in Cyberpunk 2077: Kabuki, Little China, Northside and the Arasaka Waterfront
The short version
Watson is the northern district of Night City and the first one you play in Cyberpunk 2077. It has four sub-districts (Kabuki, Little China, Northside and the Arasaka Waterfront) and is split between the Tyger Claws, Maelstrom and Arasaka.

What Watson is#
Watson is the part of Night City that was supposed to be the future and became the cautionary tale. It sits in the north, across a canal from City Center, and by 2077 it has a reputation as the bad neighborhood. Empty factories, packed apartment blocks, and a black market that never closes.
If you only know one district, it is this one. V lives here, and so does the Afterlife. For the full map, see Night City districts.
The four sub-districts#
Each one has a different owner and a different problem.
- Little China: Dense, tall and crowded, with the old Med Center and the Afterlife in its streets. The Tyger Claws work it. V's apartment is in Megabuilding H10 here, and so is Misty's Esoterica.
- Kabuki: A maze of narrow alleys that turns into a bazaar at night: implants, organs, steroids, whatever you can pay for. The Kabuki Market is the city's biggest black market after Dogtown. Lizzie's Bar, a braindance club tied to the Mox, is also here.
- Northside: The Northside Industrial District: derelict factories and working class blocks, and Maelstrom territory. The Totentanz club sits in an unfinished hotel here.
- Arasaka Waterfront: Corporate port territory, off limits to anyone not on the payroll. Konpeki Plaza, a luxury hotel, is on the western side.
How Watson fell#
After the Fourth Corporate War, a conglomerate of mostly Japanese companies called the Night City Co-Prosperity Sphere moved displaced communities from the old Japantown and Little China into the area. In Cyberpunk RED this is the Watson Development, a planned district with the Tyger Claws hired as protection. Money followed, and so did the first residential megabuildings.
Then the money moved south. The 2060s construction boom pushed wealth into City Center and Westbrook. After the Unification War, Arasaka came back in 2070, wanted the waterfront for a port, and outspent the Sphere until it collapsed. Without a financial sector, the jobs in Northside evaporated and Arasaka bought up the cheap real estate. The decline was a business plan, not an accident.
Who runs it#
Three powers, one border each. The Tyger Claws hold Little China and Kabuki. Maelstrom holds Northside, and the two gangs are the district's main war. Arasaka holds the waterfront and does not negotiate.
The Kabuki bazaars also make Watson prime hunting ground for Scavengers, who harvest implants and organs for resale. Keep your chrome out of dark alleys.
Watson in RED and 2077#
In Cyberpunk RED (set in the 2045 Time of the Red), Watson Development is a booming planned district with the NCCS behind it. By 2077 the same streets are the poorest in the city. The names carry over: Kabuki, Little China, the Tyger Claws. The money does not.
Spoilers The Konpeki Plaza job
Spoilers: Konpeki Plaza is where the opening heist goes sideways. Saburo Arasaka is killed in the hotel in 2077, and the whole district was sealed off for his visit. If you wonder why the waterfront feels so locked down, that is why.
Fixer's notes#
Where to go first: Little China, because the Afterlife is the hub for mercenary work and the streets around it are the densest in the game. Then walk the Kabuki alleys at night, because that is when the market opens.
What players miss: Northside. Opinion: it looks like a dead zone but is the best-looking stretch of the district, wide empty industrial blocks under the dust. Our read: Watson is the right place to start because every problem in Night City has a small version here. Gangs, a corp that owns the shoreline, and a market that sells your body back to you.
Tabletop tip: Kabuki is a ready-made session, a market where every stall is a hook.
