Maelstrom Gang: Chrome, Cyberpsychos and Watson

Factions & TechUpdated

The short version

Maelstrom is a Night City boostergang that treats heavy cyberware as a creed. In Cyberpunk 2077 it holds the industrial part of Watson, and it sits closer to cyberpsychosis than any other gang in the setting.

What Maelstrom is#

A boostergang is a gang that runs on cyberware. Maelstrom is the setting's extreme case: you do not join without a heavy implant job, and the faceplates and glowing optics are the gang's look. The 2077 database entry says the gang treats augmentation as a fetish and points to its brutal public executions and illegal braindance production.

Maelstrom appears in Cyberpunk 2020, RED, Edgerunners and 2077, which makes it one of the few factions present in every layer of the canon. Think of it as the cockroach of Night City, with better implants.

History across the editions#

Maelstrom dates to the 2010s, founded by a man named Hammer, from an earlier gang called the Metal Warriors. In the 2020 material the gang is already a Night City presence. The 2023 Arasaka bombing killed most of them in a frenzy right after the blast, Hammer included. Crusher took over, moved the survivors into Burleson Tower, and was later lost to a cyberpsychotic episode in 2027.

By 2045, the setting year of Cyberpunk RED, the tower was falling apart and the gang was hunting for a new base and a new fight with the Tyger Claws. They later opened a new Totentanz in an abandoned, half-built hotel, which is the 2077 headquarters.

Maelstrom in 2077#

In Cyberpunk 2077 the gang controls Watson, especially the Northside Industrial District. Royce is the leader, who took the job after deposing and imprisoning the previous boss, Brick.

Headcount is fuzzy. The usual figure is about 1,300 members, but in the mission The Ride the fixer Dex says the gang has only 30 to 40 active members. Opinion: Dex is a man who has to work near them. Take his number as an understatement.

The game's own promotional text says you will meet them at the Totentanz club, among the factories of their territory. Go in with a plan and a way out.

The occult side#

Maelstrom is the one gang in the setting that mixes chrome with ritual. Members summoned a rogue AI called Lilith through a ritual. The Blackwall page explains what a rogue AI is and why you should not invite one over.

Fans claim at least a third of the gang are cyberpsychos and the rest borderline, but that figure has no canon source, so do not quote it.

Fixer's notes#

Our read: the gang's real hook is the contradiction in the 2077 database entry. Outsiders call them lunatics. The entry says the madness is a brand and the business underneath is plain commerce. The gang's history lists smuggling, black-market tech and drug dealing. Believe the businessmen, not the rumor.

At the table, Maelstrom is a strong chrome-heavy enemy. Pair them with cyberpsychosis rules from your edition and expect a Max-Tac response if things go wrong. For the corp that started their worst day, see Arasaka.
