Tyger Claws: Night City's Yakuza-Style Gang, From Arasaka's Proxy to Japantown
The short version
The Tyger Claws are a Japanese-rooted gang and crime syndicate that control Japantown and parts of Watson and Westbrook in Night City, with about 5,500 members in 2077. They run like the yakuza: orderly when it pays, sadistic when nobody is watching.

A gang with a corporate past#
The Tyger Claws started life as Tyger's Claw, a proxy gang for Arasaka. When the 2023 bombing threw Arasaka out of North America, the leftovers were adrift until the Night City Co-Prosperity Sphere, a conglomerate of Japan-based corporations, picked them up. The Sphere's front man, the actor Shinobu Nakagawa, remade them as a guardian gang meant to protect the Japanese community in the city.
They opened a legal-looking arm, the Kimen-Gumi, that took security contracts and sometimes deputized itself as law enforcement, even working with the NCPD. Under the surface the Claws took their cut, sold protection and ran Night Market sales and pachinko parlors. Arasaka sleeper agents who stayed behind drifted into the gang too.
How they work#
The top brass prefer business to war. The business model resembles the yakuza: insult the lowest ganger and you answer to the entire gang, but if you give them what they want, everything is fine. The rank and file is another matter, because many are sadistic brutes who harass outsiders and start fights on their turf. The bosses consider this dishonorable and do not stop anyone who gets away with it.
Their look is Japanese in origin and style: katanas, street bikes and glowing tattoos. The traditional irezumi on many members hints at yakuza backgrounds.
The Nakagawa succession#
Shinobu Nakagawa dies in 2042 under mysterious circumstances, and his adopted son Hayato wins a bloody civil war over the inheritance. He takes the Nakagawa Foundation, hands it to his wife Ryoko Fujiwara to manage, and takes the name Shinobu the Second to claim the legacy.
On paper he should be the most powerful man in the city. In practice Ryoko holds the purse strings tightly, and corporations in the Sphere pull back toward their own security forces. By 2045 Hayato has added so much cyberware to dull the pain that he is losing touch, and Maelstrom is pushing into Old Japantown while Continental Brands harasses local vendors. Not a good decade.
2067 and the birth of the Mox#
In 2067 members of the Claws kill a prostitute. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Borden avenges her by killing three of the attackers, and that night the Claws kill Lizzie. The backlash is huge. Riots spread across Night City, Claws members and businesses become targets, and Lizzie becomes a symbol.
Her successors rebuild her place as Lizzie's Bar and form the Mox. The Claws and the Mox reach a deal. The bad blood never leaves.
In Cyberpunk 2077#
In 2077 the Claws hold Japantown and a lot of Watson's nightlife. Their most direct role in the game is Clouds, the braindance club that Judy Alvarez used to work at. Judy has her own reasons to hate them, and the plan to take Clouds from them is one of the central side stories.
Braindance is a natural fit for them: a business of selling experiences, run through intimidation. If you want to see more of the gang's place in the pecking order, Night City's gangs puts them next to the rest.
Fixer's notes#
Opinion: the Tyger Claws are the best-written gang in the game because they are two gangs. One wears a suit and files a contract. The other wears a katana and starts a fight. It is the contradiction, not the glowing tattoos, that makes them scary.
At the table, treat a Claw as a customer first and a threat second. Let the player earn their respect with courtesy, then show what happens when someone else wins it with violence. For where each gang sits on the map, see the districts guide.
