The Voodoo Boys: Pacifica's Netrunner Gang and Their Obsession With the Blackwall

Factions & TechUpdated

The short version

The Voodoo Boys are a secretive gang of mostly Haitian netrunners based in Pacifica, Night City. They guard the Haitian refugee community, hack for money, and spend their spare time trying to reach the rogue AIs behind the Blackwall, a goal that puts them in NetWatch's sights.

Who they are#

The Voodoo Boys are a gang of netrunners from Pacifica, known for their skill and for a dark reputation. They look the part: cooling suits and neural implants, dreadlocks and tattoos, and the bones and skulls of small birds and rodents worn as charms. Cyberdecks and neural links are the standard kit.

The gang is closed. Presumed to be entirely of Haitian descent, it is exclusive, secretive and distrustful of outsiders. The name outsiders use is not the one they use for themselves, and the real one is only told to initiated members.

Where they came from#

Their story is tied to the Haitian diaspora. The gang was originally made up of voodoo priests and priestesses, a prominent caste in Creole culture. In 2062 climate change wiped Haiti off the map, refugees arrived in Pacifica, and the gang became the self-appointed guardian of their interests and safety. Locals called them the Voodoo Boys because of a resemblance to a defunct gang of that name from earlier years.

Our read: the game leans hard on voodoo imagery, and it is worth being aware that the setting treats it as a costume as much as a culture. The more grounded part is the refugee story. The gang exists because a community with no police needed someone to stand between it and the rest of the city.

What they do for money#

Mostly hacking. The gang breaks into corporate databanks and accounts for restricted and top-secret data. They also hire themselves out as mercenary netrunners for hit-and-run jobs or for exploring ruined parts of the Old Net. Theft of virtual currency and information brokering are probably part of it.

They are known for programming viruses that can freeze neural networks, and they ignore NetWatch laws, especially about contact with rogue AIs. See the netrunner page for the role and NetWatch for the people who chase them.

The Blackwall obsession#

The gang is determined to uncover the secrets of the Old Net, and it is widely believed they probe the Blackwall in hope of contacting the rogue AIs on the other side. NetWatch has noticed, and a NetWatch employee has the job of stopping a breach.

Inside the gang there is a split. Brigitte, the leader, wants to pierce the wall, with Placide as her second-in-command. Another faction considers that too dangerous and breaks away to Dogtown. The Voodoo Boys' version of faith is that the wall will fall one day, and they want to be on the right side of the AIs when it does.

The rival they actually fight is a boostergang, the Animals, who live a few blocks away in west Pacifica. A netrunner and a brawler is not a fair match, but it is a very loud one.

What happens to them in the game

In Cyberpunk 2077 the Voodoo Boys are part of the main plot. Depending on what you choose in the quests I Walk the Line and Transmission, the Pacifica gang is either wiped out or crosses the Blackwall with Alt Cunningham's help and vanishes from public view.

It is one of the rare cases where a gang's fate depends on one player decision. Opinion: the version where they disappear is the more fitting end for a group that wanted out of the world.

Fixer's notes#

At the table, they are a good source of contacts and a terrible source of trust. Bring them something worth hearing, and never ask what the gang is really called.
