The Unification War (2069 to 2070): Why Night City Is a Free City

Factions & TechUpdated

The short version

The Unification War (2069 to 2070) was the New United States trying to drag the Free States back under federal rule. It ended after Arasaka broke the siege of Night City, with a treaty that left Night City independent and Arasaka back in North America.

  2. 2069Reelected, Myers presents a unification program. Most Free States refuse, and the NUSA declares war.
  3. 2069 to 2070The Battle of Ridgecrest in Southern California kills at least 3,078 people in one day.
  4. 2070Arasaka breaks the siege of Night City. A peace treaty follows and Night City becomes an independent city-state.
  5. 2070Arasaka is allowed back into North America and starts building its new tower on the old site in Night City.

Why the war happened#

Rosalind Myers wanted the old country back. In 2069 the NUSA president announced a unification program to extend federal rule over the autonomous Free States, framing it as a way to strengthen the nation. Most of those states disagreed.

Myers is a former CEO of Militech, and the NUSA is that company's largest customer. Opinion: that makes the war look less like national destiny and more like a very big sales call.

The sides#

The NUSA, backed by nationalized Militech forces and by the former Free States of Southern California and Utah, went up against a loose alliance of Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, Arizona, Nevada and Northern California. Washington, Oregon and Idaho stayed neutral by giving the federal government some concessions.

The federal army was mostly Militech technology plus corporate security advisers, and it pushed the alliance hard. The Battle of Ridgecrest in Southern California became the bloodiest of the war, with at least 3,078 people reported dead in a single day.

Night City in the middle#

Night City sat next to NUSA-allied Southern California and tried to stay neutral, but only just. Things got bad enough that the Soviets sent what they called humanitarian aid. Independent observers said the trucks were full of weapons. Citizens who fled east to Texas found its borders closed to them. Federal intelligence agents slipped into the city and were pulled out again on Myers' orders.

Then came Arasaka. Its forces broke the siege of Night City in 2070, and every side was suddenly unwilling to push for total war. The NUSA could not afford to escalate, so Myers took the peace terms. That is the Treaty of Unification.

What the treaty left#

Night City comes out of the war as an independent city-state, not part of the NUSA and not part of any Free State. Arasaka gets permission back into North America and builds its new tower on the site of the old one. The 2077 map you play on is the result: a free city holding a corporate tower over a crater.

Next door, Dogtown is the war's loose end. Kurt Hansen, a former Militech colonel who fought for the NUSA, held onto part of Pacifica against orders after the fighting stopped, and the unfinished resort district became a walled-off pocket nobody has quite agreed on since.

The peace does not last forever. By 2077 relations between the NUSA and the Free States have gone sour again, and the Republic of Texas, which never signed the treaty, remains a sore spot.

Fixer's notes#

If you play Cyberpunk 2077, the war is the reason the city has a mayor, an unusual number of private armies, and a giant Arasaka building in the middle. Veterans show up everywhere. 6th Street in particular recruits a lot of them.

The war is a good setting for tabletop. It is a narrow window, around a year, with clear sides and a hard end date. For the long road that led to it, start with the Collapse. For the timeline around it, read the full timeline.

Night City has its own page for the free-city arrangement and who runs it.
