  • 9. Humanity: Everyone's secrets come out at once, and someone gets a price put on them.
  • 10. My Moon My Man: The last run, and the last scene. Bring a tissue.

Episodes 1 to 3: the setup

Episode 1, "Let You Down": David Martinez, a student at Arasaka Academy, loses his mother Gloria when a drive-by catches them on the way home and Trauma Team will not treat people who cannot pay. He finds the military-grade Sandevistan she had been selling on the side, and has a ripperdoc named Doc install it. Watch for: on David's run through the streets to school, Lucy is on screen from behind for a second, a full episode before anyone says her name. The episode's opening scene is also what V watches as a braindance in the game's Over the Edge side job.

Episode 2, "Like a Boy": David beats his bully Katsuo Tanaka with the new implant, gets expelled, and meets a data thief named Lucy. She shows him a braindance of the Moon, and it is a distraction while Maine's crew closes in. Watch for: the song at the end of the episode is "I Really Want to Stay at Your House". Director Hiroyuki Imaishi had it in mind for that spot, and it plays on Body Heat Radio in Cyberpunk 2077.

Episode 3, "Smooth Criminal": Maine was Gloria's buyer, so he cuts David a deal: work off the debt. David meets the whole crew, a job to steal navigation data from Tanaka's driver goes sideways, and fixer Faraday is not pleased. Watch for: at the party afterward Pilar juggles bottles and plates for the crowd. Our read: it is the closest the show gets to showing him happy, and you will want to rewatch it after episode 4.

Episodes 4 to 6: the crew

Episode 4, "Lucky You": David trains with everyone, and the night out ends when a cyberpsycho shoots Pilar dead. David freezes, then saves Lucy, and Maine finishes the fight. Lucy admits the Moon was real, and David promises to take her. Watch for: at the start of the episode David walks past two cops talking about a psycho with a projectile launcher in Watson. The show tells you what is coming and you still do not see it.

Episode 5, "All Eyez on Me": the crew learns Tanaka secretly loves the snuff braindances of editor Jimmy Kurosaki, and tries to grab JK as bait. It backfires, JK gets David, and then he agrees to help set the trap. Tanaka is captured, JK is killed, and David is left with JK's warning that the Sandevistan will cost him his mind. Watch for: JK's series is called Edgerunners, and the logo David later paints on his jacket started as the logo of that series.

Episode 6, "Girl on Fire": Maine is already losing it to cyberpsychosis, so Lucy takes Kiwi's place diving into Tanaka's mind. Tanaka dies, the crew's jammer fails, and Trauma Team, NCPD and MaxTac close in. Dorio dies in the firefight, and Maine blows himself up so David can get away with his arms. Watch for: this is the episode that made series writer Bartosz Sztybor pick Kai Ikarashi, who storyboarded it, to direct Edgerunners 2. Our read: it is also the episode where the show stops being a cool heist story.

Episodes 7 to 10: the fall

Episode 7, "Stronger": months later, in 2076, David runs the crew and wears Maine's arms. Faraday offers him a job that turns out to come from Militech. Lucy tells David about her childhood as an Arasaka child netrunner, and that night she kills an agent who came looking for erased data. Watch for: Doc first mentions Adam Smasher here, and David says he sounds like a hoax. It ages badly in about three episodes.

Episode 8, "Stay": David kills an Arasaka lab director, then an innocent worker, and the cyberpsychosis starts to show. Faraday flips to Arasaka, Kiwi goes with him, and Lucy walks into a trap. Watch for: David stares at a TV ad for Moon tickets priced at 250,000 eurodollars, says it is cheaper than he thought, and Lucy points out it is one way.

Episode 9, "Humanity": Faraday and Kiwi learn that Lucy killed Tanaka on purpose and erased David from Tanaka's records. Faraday uses her as leverage to make David wear the Cyberskeleton, and David tells Rebecca and Falco they are getting her back. Watch for: David says the final job pays two and a half million eurodollars, which is why Lucy and Falco each leave with 1.25 million in episode 10.

Episode 10, "My Moon My Man": David fights through Arasaka Tower, Faraday and Rebecca die to Adam Smasher, and Lucy kisses David back to sanity for a moment. He stays to hold Smasher off so Falco can get Lucy out. Lucy ends up on the Moon, alone. Watch for: the Afterlife names a drink after David. It is vodka and NiCola. Opinion: it is the most Night City memorial there is.

Why every title is a song#

The episode names are borrowed: "Like a Boy" is Ciara, "Smooth Criminal" is Michael Jackson, "Lucky You" is Eminem, "All Eyez on Me" is 2Pac, "Girl on Fire" is Alicia Keys, "Stronger" is Kanye West, "Stay" is Rihanna, "Humanity" is the Scorpions and "My Moon My Man" is Feist. "Let You Down" is the exception: it is the ending theme written for the show by Dawid Podsiadło.

That is also the soundtrack for the rewatch: see the Edgerunners soundtrack guide for the songs that are actually in the show.

Fixer's notes#

Watch order: episode 1 straight to episode 10, no skipping. The show is built so that the early cheerful scenes get worse on a second viewing, especially anything with the crew.

If you came from the game, the series is a prequel set a year or two before 2077. If you came to see what the fuss is about, start with the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners overview, then come back here. After the finale, Edgerunners 2 has a new cast and a different kind of ending.

Characters that turn up in these episodes have their own pages: Tanaka and Kiwi.
