The short version

What Gloria is to the story#
Gloria is the reason David goes to Arasaka Academy at all, and she is in the first episode of Edgerunners for about as long as it takes to make you love her. She is a paramedic for REO Meatwagon, with a vivid red head of hair and a Thorton Galena she drives to work.
Her dream is for David to join Arasaka and leave Santo Domingo behind. The cost is more than a paramedic's pay, so she supplements it by taking cyberware from corpses and selling it.
The ambulance birth#
The best Gloria story is her backstory. She was reattaching a mercenary's shot-off arm in a speeding ambulance when her water broke. She finished the sutures, swapped seats with the merc and delivered David herself. The merc cut the umbilical cord with the mantis blades in the arm she had just reattached.
It is the origin of the bond between mother and son: she would do anything for him, and he would never let her down.
The Sandevistan#
Gloria is also the link between David and Maine. She had taken a military-grade Sandevistan from the body of a cyberpsycho, Lt. Col. James Norris, and agreed to sell it to Maine. She was killed before the sale. David finds the Sandevistan at home, and the crew spends episode 2 looking for it. See Sandevistan for what the implant does.
Spoilers What happens to Gloria
In episode 1 David and Gloria are caught in a gang drive-by on the way home from the academy. Trauma Team arrives and ignores them because they cannot afford the service. A low-end surgeon treats them, and the next day Gloria dies of her wounds, because her body had been worked too hard for too long.
David cremates her cheaply and keeps the urn and her EMT jacket. He wears the jacket for the rest of the series. Afterward Lucy places the ashes in a niche at the North Oak Columbarium with the words "You were right. David reached the top of Arasaka Tower."
Fixer's notes#
Gloria's jacket is the same jacket that ends up in Cyberpunk 2077: it started as a REO Meatwagon EMT jacket before it became David's. Opinion: it is the best prop in the show, an EMT jacket that goes from mother to son and then, in the game, to a stranger.
For the rest of the family, see David Martinez and Maine. The Trauma Team page covers the service that ignores them.
