Who Maine is#
Maine is the big blond man who runs a crew out of Night City and believes in a fair shake for everyone who works for him. He introduces himself by hanging David upside down by one leg, which is a fair summary of his approach to first impressions.
He is the series' third lead after David and Lucy, and the one with the most obvious ambition: he wants a legend's career, though he cares more about his crew than the fame.
Where Maine came from#
Maine was born in Portland, Maine, the son of a jazz singer who named him after the state. A sickly kid who got beaten up, he decided to get bigger than everyone around him, took up underground boxing and spent his first prize money on titanium hands.
He worked as a bouncer, got fired for beating up five men who turned out to be NUSA SpecOps, and was recruited by them anyway. He served in South America, then left after two years of watching villages burn. A former unit mate, Solomon Reed, later offered him a spy job in Night City. Maine turned it down and came to the city to run his own crew instead.
How he treats David#
In episode 2 Maine finds out that David has the Sandevistan that Gloria was about to sell him, and takes the news as theft, until David tells him his mother just died. After that Maine keeps David close: a first gun, driving lessons and a push toward Lucy.
Our read: Maine is the first adult in David's life after Gloria who treats him like a person, and that is why David spends the second half of the series trying to be him.
Cyberware and the problem with it#
Maine's habit is chrome: cyberarms, a projectile launcher, cyberlegs, a linear frame, subdermal armor and EMP threading. His advice to David is to take more cyberware to level up, and he does it himself. Cyberpsychosis is the show's price tag, and Maine is the first person we meet who has to think about it.
Spoilers What happens to Maine
In episode 6 Maine starts blacking out, hallucinating and swinging his mood around, and he hurts Kiwi while she is trying to hack Tanaka. When Trauma Team, NCPD and MaxTac close in, Maine fights back to back with Dorio, and loses control when she dies. He tells David to run and blows himself up, taking several MaxTac officers with him, and David leaves with one of his arms.
David wears Maine's arms from then on. Lucy writes "You were the only family I ever had" on the shared niche for Maine, Dorio and Pilar.
Fixer's notes#
Maine's story is the same one the show tells again with David: a man who wanted to make it and kept buying chrome to get there. Watch episode 4 again once you have seen the whole show.
If you are writing a tabletop crew, Maine is the textbook Solo-as-leader: a veteran with a past he does not talk about and a crew he would die for. See Dorio and Pilar for the rest of the original crew.
Falco, the crew's driver, has his own page: Falco.
