Edgerunners and Cyberpunk 2077: Every Connection Between the Show and the Game

Timeline#

1. Sep 6, 2022Patch 1.6, the Edgerunners Update: secrets, equipment and Photo Mode additions tied to the show.
2. Sep 13, 2022Edgerunners premieres on Netflix, a week after the patch.
3. Sep 21, 2023Update 2.0 adds the Edgerunner perk, with David on its art.

How the show and the game fit together#

Edgerunners is a standalone story that takes place before Cyberpunk 2077. Its success helped lift the game to 20 million copies sold.

Edgerunners 2 is set in 2078, after the events of the game. Our read: the easy way to think about the three is a timeline, 2075 for David, 2077 for V and 2078 for D. The show and the game never need to share a plot.

Same people, same places#

Characters who speak in both are played by the same English voice actors: Alec Newman is Adam Smasher in both, and Wakako Okada and Delamain are played by the game's actors too.

Places overlap too. The Afterlife in Little China is in both. Lizzie's Bar, the Kabuki braindance club that is the Mox's headquarters in the game and where Judy Alvarez works, is also an Edgerunners location. Arasaka and its rival Militech are in both, too.

Phantom Liberty has a small nod as well: in the Chinese dub, V sings a verse of "⁠I Really Want to Stay at Your House⁠" during the Four Score and Seven quest if you choose to wait at the basketball courtyard in Tranquil Terrace.

Patch 1.6: the Edgerunners Update#

CD Projekt Red shipped Patch 1.6 on September 6, 2022, a week before the series premiered. It added Edgerunners secrets across Night City, with new equipment and Photo Mode additions. The patch notes only say "⁠secrets⁠", and the best known of them is David's jacket, below.

Update 2.0 and 2.1: perk and boss fight#

Update 2.0 (September 21, 2023) added the Edgerunner perk to the Technical Ability tree, and the character on its art is David. The perk lets you exceed your cyberware capacity at the cost of max health, with a chance to enter a damage-boosting Fury when you kill. It requires License to Chrome. Our read: it is the show's lesson as a perk, more chrome, more power, less of you.

Update 2.1 (December 5, 2023) reworked the boss fight with Adam Smasher so that he adapts to the player and uses a Sandevistan, as he does in the show. The game's patch notes name Edgerunners as the reference. See Sandevistan for what that implant does.

Update 2.5: the Edgerunners 2 update#

Update 2.5 launched on October 22, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, two days after Edgerunners 2. The Edgerunners content is a new side quest, Clampdown, set before the events of Edgerunners 2, a five-piece gear set based on King that you get from that quest, and a new radio station, HKGN 102.0 FM, with tracks from the series.

To start Clampdown, finish The Heist and two gigs for Wakako Okada, then wait for her message. The rest of 2.5 is not Edgerunners: dual-wielding, glamdocs for hand cyberware, cross-platform mod support and a handful of fixes.

Fixer's notes#

Best order if you want it all: watch Edgerunners, play the Over the Edge side job, then watch Edgerunners 2 and start Clampdown. Opinion: the jacket makes more sense after the show than before it.
