What Kiwi does for the crew#

Kiwi is the crew's eyes in the network. She is tall, thin, wears a long red jacket and a mask over a missing lower jaw, and mostly appears off-screen on jobs, feeding the others intel. She is a netrunner with a spiderweb tattoo, and the mask covers a cybernetic jaw.

Her motto is "never trust a soul in Night City", which is a strange thing to say to a crew you work for. She also trusts Lucy more than anyone else on the team.

Where she came from#

Kiwi does not remember her parents. She was likely sold to a corporate factory as a toddler, where her small hands assembled implant parts. When she refused the foreman who had looked after her, he sold her to a brothel. A client tore off part of her jaw there, and she replaced it with cyberware rather than reconstructing it.

While she recovered, she taught herself netrunning, and used it to burn down both the brothel and the factory with the owners inside. Then she left for Night City. Our read: it explains the mask and the motto in one go.

Kiwi and Lucy#

Kiwi is the one who brought Lucy into Maine's crew, about a year before David arrives, and she acts as a mentor to the younger netrunner. In episode 5 she is also the one who works out that Tanaka secretly watches Jimmy Kurosaki's braindances, which sets up the plan to catch him.

She is the character you can hear the crew's problems in. In episode 6 Lucy has to take her place at the terminal. That is how Lucy ends up inside Tanaka's head.

What Kiwi does in the end

After the time skip Kiwi helps David on jobs. Faraday bribes her to turn on the crew and uses her to trap Lucy. Kiwi dives into Lucy's memories and learns where she came from. She also goes along with the convoy mission where David is forced to install the Cyberskeleton.

Faraday then has her killed as a loose end. Before she dies, she calls Falco and gives him the location of Faraday's aerodyne, and with it Lucy. Lucy writes "You taught me to never trust anyone in NC" on Kiwi's niche, using her mentor's own motto.

Fixer's notes#

Series director Hiroyuki Imaishi has named Kiwi his favorite character. If you only watch the show for the action, she is the reason the quiet scenes work.

At the table: Kiwi is the NPC netrunner who knows more than she says and sells it. Our read: put her next to a PC who needs information, and make them pay for it. See Lucy and Faraday for the two people she is tied to.
