Pilar in one paragraph#
Tall, black mohawk, golden cyberarms and a pair of goggles that run down to his chin like a beard. Pilar is the crew's techie, a crude one, and he fights with his younger sister Rebecca so constantly that Rebecca once decided she would be the one to kill him someday instead of some random punk.
He is in the room in episode 2 when Maine hangs David up by one leg, and he is the one who loses a cigarette to the Sandevistan when David proves what he can do.
Papa Sunrise and the street#
Pilar was born in Night City and idolized his father, a mercenary known as Papa Sunrise. When their mother vanished and then their father disappeared too, Pilar became convinced Papa Sunrise had been killed and swore to find the people responsible. He and Rebecca lost the family apartment and lived in their dad's broken-down car for a while.
Wakako Okada, "Auntie" Wakako, gave him his first gigs. Rebecca kept ruining them, so he joined Maine's crew where he could keep an eye on her.
The party scene#
In episode 3, at the party after the Maxim Kuznetsov car job, Pilar juggles bottles and plates in front of the whole crew. His long arms give him a lot of physical skill, and gets to be the show-off he always tried to be. Our read: it is the only scene where the show lets him be good at something in public.
He also tries to get closer to Lucy that night. Lucy explains in episode 4 that she went with him, and knocked him out when he got too pushy.
Spoilers What happens to Pilar
In episode 4 the crew leaves a bar and Pilar starts taunting a homeless man. The man is a cyberpsycho with a hidden arm cannon, and Pilar is shot in the head at close range. David freezes, Lucy is targeted next, and David and Maine finish the cyberpsycho.
Afterward David is offered Pilar's golden hands and turns them down. Lucy later writes "You were the only family I ever had" on the shared niche for Pilar, Maine and Dorio. Opinion: Pilar's death is the point where the show tells you nobody is safe, and it does it with a joke still in the air.
Fixer's notes#
Fun fact: Pilar's English and Japanese voice actors previously shared the role of Cheetor in Beast Wars. For more on his sister, see Rebecca; for how cyberpsychosis works, see cyberpsychosis.
At the table: Pilar is the loud techie who means well, the character you let the players like for exactly one session.
