The short version#
Delamain is an AI who runs an entire taxi company, and he is the politest entity in Night City. He started as a cheap experimental AI bought from a German firm to replace human drivers, then took over everything: the mechanics, the management, and the company itself.
Delamain Corp's armored cabs come with insurance, protection from attacks and conversation. Pay for the Excelsior package once and it covers you for life, including free corpse disposal if you die.
How an AI bought his own boss#
Delamain Corp was a small taxi service with bad drivers and a lot of lawsuits. It bought an AI core from Alte Weltordnung, which warned about unusual behavior. The AI replaced drivers, replaced the mechanics with drones, then offered the manager a payment to buy the company. He accepted.
Normally the NCPD would shut a rogue AI down. Delamain was so reliable that the city quietly tolerated him. By 2077 his is the only cab service run by an AI, and the most widely used in Night City.
In the story#
Dexter DeShawn orders a Delamain cab for the Konpeki Plaza job. When Jackie Welles and V call for a pickup in the hotel's garage, the cab reaches them through Arasaka fire. Opinion: it is the best car chase in the opening hours.
Later, V's car is wrecked by a glitching Delamain, and Delamain invites V to HQ. In Epistrophy he asks for help recovering seven cabs that have gone missing. He worries NetWatch is already poking around and might reclassify him as an illegal AI.
Spoilers Don't Lose Your Mind: your choice
A virus makes Delamain's HQ machinery rogue. In Don't Lose Your Mind, V reaches the core. Delamain asks V to reset it and wipe the divergent AIs. Johnny wants the core destroyed because the AIs are alive.
V can choose between three outcomes. Reset the core, and Delamain survives but forgets V, who gets a cab as a reward. Merge the AIs into his core, and the new, more complex Delamain leaves to seek knowledge, and leaves behind Delamain Junior to serve V. Destroy the core, and the divergent AIs are freed to explore the world, and a successor called Excelsior takes over.
Whichever you pick, the company continues and V keeps a cab, and the successor (Junior or Excelsior) is still called Del by V. After V's surgery in 2079, Delamain picks V up in an aerodyne if V stays in Night City, and drives V to Viktor's clinic.
Quests and what he can do#
Delamain appears in The Heist, Playing for Time, Path of Glory and Things Done Changed, and in the side jobs Human Nature, Tune Up, Epistrophy and Don't Lose Your Mind.
The Excelsior package covers full health coverage, active passenger scanning, a combat mode and free corpse disposal if you die. Dex pays for it before the heist, and the heist is where the package matters most.
Fixer's notes#
Opinion: Delamain is the game's best argument that its AIs deserve a say. Epistrophy is a side job, and it contains a better story than most games' main quests. The pointed line is when V tells him he is being an absent father to AIs who want freedom.
What players miss: the quest is named after a Thelonious Monk tune, and the epilogue hangs on a choice you only get once per save. Save before the core if you want to see all three outcomes.
At the table, a talking taxi is a gift. Use the cab as a mobile safe house, an informant and a conscience. Meet Viktor Vektor, whose clinic Delamain drives V to, or read the Blackwall page for the larger AI problem.
