What is confirmed#
A sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 was announced in October 2022, alongside a new Witcher trilogy and other Witcher projects. Its internal codename is Project Orion. It is being built with Unreal Engine 5 by CD Projekt's North American studios.
In May 2025 the game entered pre-production, and CD Projekt began referring to it as Cyberpunk 2. That is the whole list of firm facts. Everything else you read is somebody's guess.
The release window, and what we can say about it#
CD Projekt has not given a release date. What it has said is that going from pre-production to final release takes four to five years on average for its games. It did not rule out the sequel arriving as late as 2030 or early 2031.
That is an average the company used to explain its pace, not a promise. Anyone quoting a specific year is guessing. The Cyberpunk 2077 FAQ keeps the short version updated.
Who is making it#
CD Projekt's North American studios are developing the game. CD Projekt Red bought two studios on that continent in 2021: Vancouver (formerly Digital Scapes Studios, in March) and Boston (The Molasses Flood, in October). Which studio handles which part has not been stated.
Unreal Engine 5 is a change from the original. Cyberpunk 2077 shipped on CD Projekt's own REDengine 4, and the studio announced its Epic Games partnership on 21 March 2022. The studio's CTO said at the time that the switch came down to Unreal's new focus on open-world games.
What is not confirmed#
No release date, platform list, setting, protagonist, cast or story has been announced as of July 2026. We do not know whether it is set in Night City, whether V returns, or how it treats the ending you picked in Cyberpunk 2077's endings.
Treat leaks and fan trailers as fan content. A fan film or mock-up can be a pleasure to watch, but it is not a source.
Fixer's notes: what to do while you wait#
Four to five years is a long gap, so use it. Cyberpunk 2077 sold over 40 million copies as of July 2026, which tells you the studio has an audience for a second game and a reason to take its time. If you have only played the base game, Phantom Liberty is the better half of it.
If you want the lore the sequel will inherit, read the timeline and the Blackwall page. For a table fix, Cyberpunk RED is the setting set in 2045, with the same Night City.
