The short version#

Saburo built Arasaka into the corporation every other megacorp is measured against. He was born in Tokyo in 1919 into a family that already ran a company, and he spent his long life turning it into a global power.

In the tabletop line he is the man behind the curtain. In Cyberpunk 2077 he is on screen for a few minutes and then dies.

From pilot to emperor#

In the lore, Saburo flew for the Imperial Japanese Navy in World War II and was wounded in a dogfight over Guadalcanal in 1942. He lost the use of his left arm and the sight in his left eye. He tried to commit seppuku on August 15, 1945, the day of Japan's surrender, and stopped when he saw his father's plan: keep the family fortune safe overseas and rebuild through business.

His fighter-pilot story is modeled on a real WWII ace, Saburo Sakai, who also lost vision in his left eye. Our read: it is the cleanest bit of character design in the setting. A man who lost a war decides to win the peace.

What the older books say#

In Cyberpunk 2020 he is the unofficial most powerful man on Earth, with Kei running the company on paper and Saburo making decisions behind him. He hates America and loathes Militech's CEO, and the feud runs into the Fourth Corporate War.

He wanted Alt Cunningham's Soulkiller program and got it. The 2023 bombing of Arasaka Tower in Night City is part of that history, and Johnny Silverhand is the man behind it. In 2020-era books Saburo is bedridden in a wheelchair; in 2077 he walks. Pick the edition you mean before you argue about him.

What happens in 2077

By 2077 he is 158 and still in charge. His son Yorinobu steals a Relic prototype from a Tokyo lab, and Saburo sails to Night City to confront him. In Yorinobu's suite at Konpeki Plaza, with V and Jackie hiding in the room, Yorinobu strangles him. Arasaka announces natural causes, and Yorinobu blames Goro Takemura.

That is not the end. Saburo has an engram in Mikoshi in Tokyo. Hanako brings it into play on the Devil route, and V can meet it before the board meeting. When the board falls in line, Saburo's engram is put into Yorinobu's body.

Why the lore keeps him alive#

Saburo's obsession is the quest for permanence. He spent decades in med tanks and invested in bioengineering and mind-preserving technology, and he made an engram of himself in Mikoshi at Arasaka's Tokyo headquarters. The Relic project, led by Anders Hellman, was his answer to death.

His name means third-born son. His public image is an old-fashioned samurai patriarch, and he started having children only in his sixties. That combination makes him a patient, cold planner with a family problem.

Fixer's notes#

Opinion: the game's best trick is making you watch the Emperor die so early that you never meet the real man. What you get instead is a ghost, in a box, that decides how the corporation ends. The Devil ending is that idea made literal.

Details most players miss: he speaks Japanese in every language version of the game, and his diary and his katana are in his aerodyne on the roof of Konpeki Plaza. A family photo in Yorinobu's office has Saburo's face hidden behind a whiskey glass, and the same photo in Saburo's office hides Yorinobu.

At the table, run Saburo as a force and not a character. The party never meets him. They meet what he built. Hanako Arasaka and Yorinobu Arasaka are the two sides of the family you can actually sit across from, and Goro Takemura is the man who guarded him.
