The short version#
Evelyn is the client in the first act, the woman who walks V and Jackie into the biggest job of their lives. She is a doll, a sex worker whose implants let her follow a client's script, at Clouds in Night City, and she is smarter than most of the people hiring her.
She wanted to be an actress. She ends up writing the screenplay for a heist, and she is the one with the plan.
The set-up#
In 2077 Evelyn is a regular guest of Yorinobu Arasaka at Konpeki Plaza. The Voodoo Boys hire her to bring back a braindance of his suite, because they want the Relic, a biochip holding Johnny Silverhand's engram.
Evelyn realizes what they are after and decides to sell it herself to NetWatch, asking for money, protection and a new identity. She hires Dexter DeShawn, who assembles the crew: T-Bug, Jackie Welles and V. The prep happens with Judy Alvarez, Evelyn's friend from Clouds, who edits the braindance and helps weigh the risk.
Evelyn trusts V more than she trusts Dex, so she offers a side deal: cut Dex out and keep a bigger share. The game lets you say yes.
Spoilers What happens to her
After the heist collapses, Evelyn hides at Lizzie's Bar, then returns to work at Clouds. During a session, while she is connected to the Net, the Voodoo Boys send a virus through her. She survives, but her cyberware is wrecked. She is comatose and aware.
The caretaker, Oswald Forrest, tries to have her fixed, abuses her, then passes her to ripperdoc Finn Gerstatt. Gerstatt sells her to the Scavengers, who use her high-end doll implants and braindance recorder to make black-market braindances. V and Judy find her in an abandoned power plant.
Judy takes her home, and for a while her condition improves. Then she takes her own life in Judy's bathtub while Judy is away. She is cremated and her ashes are interred at the North Oak Columbarium. Her epitaph reads: She died valiantly fighting the system.
Quests that feature her#
Evelyn appears across the opening arc: The Information, The Heist, Automatic Love, Disasterpiece and Double Life, with Both Sides, Now as the side job that closes her story. Judy Alvarez is in nearly all of them.
If you want the full picture, play them in order and watch for the braindance scenes. Judy recovers fragments of Evelyn's recordings, including footage of the abuse and her meetings with the Voodoo Boys, which is the evidence that explains what really happened.
Fixer's notes#
Opinion: Evelyn is the moral center of the plot, and she is gone from it early. Everyone treats her as a tool, the Voodoo Boys, NetWatch, Yorinobu, Woodman. Only Judy sees her as a person, and the game punishes everyone for the difference.
Her hair changes through the game (blue most of the time, blonde in the braindance, dark gray in Disasterpiece, reddish-orange in Double Life, natural black in Both Sides, Now). That is not a continuity error. Dolls change their look for clients.
On Judy and Evelyn: quest director Pawel Sasko said a romance was hinted at but kept vague on purpose. Our read: take Judy's grief at face value, and play Both Sides, Now before you decide anything else about her.
At the table, Evelyn is the model for the client who looks like a victim but is working three angles. Read Dexter DeShawn and Yorinobu Arasaka next, and the story explained for the timeline.
