The short version#
Dex is the man who sends V and Jackie after the biggest score of their careers. He was a fixer, not a merc, and he built a reputation on charisma and an eye for who could do a job. He picks crews by gut, not by roster.
Regulars at the Afterlife call him Black Jesus. He is considered one of the best, though not on the level of Rogue Amendiares.
What he is like#
Dex left Night City in 2075 and came back in 2077. Rumor says it was a vacation. One contact says he ruined half of Pacifica and made powerful enemies. Both can be true.
Evelyn Parker hires him for the Relic job, and he calls in T-Bug, Jackie Welles and V. He spends €$10,000 up front on a stolen Militech Flathead from Maelstrom, and buys the Excelsior package from Delamain for the getaway. Whatever else you say about him, he plans for the exit.
Spoilers The betrayal and his end
The heist collapses when Yorinobu Arasaka kills his father Saburo in front of V and Jackie. V reaches the backup meeting point, the No-Tell Motel. Dex is furious about the heat, shoots V, and has the body dumped at the Municipal Landfill. The Relic keeps V alive.
He books a spaceport seat for the next morning. Goro Takemura finds him first, makes him lead the way to V, and kills him with one shot to the head as Dex tries to bargain.
You can find Dex's body at the landfill, in the spot where he shot V, past the end of the road south of the Medeski Fuel Station. His pistol, Plan B, is there to pick up.
His jobs in the story#
Dex bookends the prologue. He appears across The Ride, The Pickup, The Information and The Heist, and he comes back in Playing for Time, where his fate is settled.
He has a regular bodyguard in Oleg Darkevich and no regular crew. He picks mercs for each gig by instinct, which is how an unproven pair like V and Jackie end up on a job this size. That is also his weakness: a fixer who bets on potential has to be right every time.
Fixer's notes#
Opinion: Dex is a good villain because he is a professional, not a monster. Everything he does is a sensible answer to a catastrophe. That is what makes the motel scene sting: he does not hate V.
A tip many players miss: go back to the landfill and take Plan B. It is a unique pistol and a nice bit of closure.
At the table, run a Dex as the fixer who hires the crew and pays on time right up to the one job where he does not. Compare him with the fixers in RED and keep a plan for when the client turns on the party.
